Inside an inventory financing deal
The partner pays for part of a stock purchase, or sets a limit you draw against to buy goods. The goods secure what you owe. You repay as items sell or on a fixed schedule, depending on the structure. Because the partner might have to sell the stock to recover its money, it values goods at what they would fetch quickly, not at your shelf price, and lends only a share of that value.
That share is often called the advance rate, and the resulting cap is the borrowing base. Fast-moving, easy-to-resell goods support a larger share than seasonal fashion, perishables or custom parts. Expect the partner to ask for regular stock reports and, on larger lines, to inspect or count the goods.
The goods as collateral, and the UCC notice
Most partners record their claim on the stock with a UCC financing statement filed with the state. That filing tells other creditors the goods are pledged. Read the collateral description closely: some agreements cover only the inventory financed, while a blanket lien reaches receivables, equipment and other business assets. A blanket lien can make it harder to secure other financing later, so ask whether the partner will limit the description to inventory.
What floor plan financing means for dealers
Floor plan financing is a type of inventory financing for high-value items tracked one by one, such as vehicles, boats, trailers or large appliances. The partner pays the supplier for each unit, the dealer repays that unit's balance when it sells, and the partner checks the lot or showroom against its records. It suits dealers with serial-numbered stock rather than stores selling many low-priced items.
Inventory financing, factoring, a credit line or working capital
| Option | What secures it | Repayment pattern | Strongest fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inventory financing | The stock | As stock sells, or by calendar | Stock is the main asset and sells steadily |
| Invoice factoring | Receivables you sell | Your customers settle with the factor | You sell on invoice to other businesses |
| Line of credit | Receivables, a general lien, or nothing | Revolving; interest on the drawn balance | Purchases recur in varying sizes |
| Working capital | Varies | Fixed installments | A single gap that closes on a known date |
Inventory financing and factoring are often confused. Inventory financing borrows against goods you still own; factoring sells invoices you have already issued, so it only helps businesses that sell on credit terms to other businesses. A store selling to shoppers at the register has no invoices to factor.

Stock records a partner will want
- A current inventory list or report, valued at cost
- Stock aging: how long items have been on hand
- Turnover: how many times stock sells through in a year
- Supplier invoices or the order you plan to place
- Bank statements and recent financial statements
Slow-moving or obsolete items usually count for little or nothing toward the borrowing base, so clearing them before applying can help. Each partner sets its own advance rates and reporting rules. The comparison page sets inventory financing beside the other five options, and the route a request takes shows the steps after the first call.
